The agreement between TV4 Group and SBS Discovery Media is the result of TV4 Group’s structural review of its portfolio of channels and sports rights that was initiated last autumn to strengthen and develop the operations in the long term.
“We have created substantial value in TV11 and, following detailed negotiations, we have now sold the channel. The transaction provides additional economic scope to further enhance investments in our own Swedish productions and in TV4 Play, two areas that we are prioritising going forward,” says TV4 Group’s CEO, Casten Almqvist.
As part of the review, a number of rights for football internationals and the free-TV rights for the recent Swedish ice hockey championship playoff were also sold during the autumn and winter.
Ownership and operation of TV11 will transfer from TV4 Group to SBS Discovery Media on June 1 provided that the Swedish Broadcasting Authority (Myndigheten för Radio och TV) approves the reassignment of TV11’s broadcasting licence.
The TV4 Group has delivered engaging news, major entertainment shows of great variety and quality, live sport and top-class drama to Swedish viewers for more than two decades.
